Learning German gets much easier once you stop memorizing random words and start with vocabulary you'll genuinely use — this pack focuses on high-frequency A1 words for everyday communication, plus the situations international students and newcomers commonly run into in Germany.
Learn the article with every noun. Don't learn Wohnung = apartment. Learn die Wohnung = apartment. That small habit pays off enormously once you reach German grammar.

Words on their own get you surprisingly far, and then they stop. Everything below is the other half: what to actually say at the counter, on the phone, at the Bürgeramt and in the waiting room — the German a classroom tends not to cover because it is not grammar, it is just what people say.

Moving to Germany means using German in situations you may never have practiced in a classroom. A simple rule: when you're unsure in a formal or professional situation, Sie is the safer starting point. Use du with people you already have an informal relationship with, such as friends and many fellow students. At university and workplaces, conventions can differ — pay attention to what the other person uses.

🚫 Avoid this instead
This is much more useful than simply saying Mein Deutsch ist schlecht ("My German is bad"). Avoid unnecessarily putting yourself down — the phrase above gets the same message across while keeping the conversation constructive.

What German vocabulary should I learn at A1?+
Start with greetings, personal information, numbers, time, family, food, shopping, housing, transport and everyday communication — the categories in this pack, roughly in that order.
Should I learn German nouns with their articles?+
Yes. Learn der/die/das together with each noun, rather than memorizing the English translation on its own — it makes later German grammar much easier.
How many German words do I need for A1?+
There's no universal CEFR rule for an exact word count. The Goethe-Institut publishes its own official vocabulary list for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 exam — the closest thing to an authoritative benchmark.
Is this the official Goethe A1 vocabulary list?+
No. This is a German LifeBox practical vocabulary resource, built around everyday communication and newcomer needs — not a reproduction of Goethe's exam word list.
What German words are particularly useful when moving to Germany?+

Is A1 German enough to live in Germany?+
A1 helps with simple everyday situations, but isn't enough for independent communication in most complex ones. Make it in Germany recommends stronger German for things like shopping, the foreigners authority, and doctor visits independently.
Can I use this vocabulary pack to prepare for the Goethe A1 exam?+
It can support your prep, but shouldn't replace Goethe's own official practice material or vocabulary list — they provide free listening, reading, writing and speaking practice for exactly that.
Do I need advanced German to use these phrases?+
No. The guide focuses primarily on practical A1–A2-style communication, while some phrases naturally extend into B1-level everyday use.
Should I always use "Sie" with strangers?+
Not always. Context matters. In formal situations, Sie is a safe starting point, but German-speaking environments increasingly vary in their use of du and Sie.
