Germany recognises over 300 vocational occupations, but the "best" Ausbildung isn't the same for everyone. Filter 50 representative professions by field, work style and German level, then build a shortlist you can defend.
Your Ausbildung choice comes down to what you enjoy doing, what you're good at, how much German you can use professionally, whether you prefer people, technology, business or practical work, your educational background, the kind of workplace you want, and where you want your career to go afterwards.
Don't choose an Ausbildung just because it's "in demand." Choose one whose actual day-to-day work you can see yourself doing for several years, because that's how long it lasts, and a shortage occupation you dislike is still a bad career choice.

Before looking at occupation names, decide what kind of work suits you. Tap the row that sounds like you: the finder below opens on that field.
These are starting points, not aptitude assessments. Use Check-U and the detailed occupation profiles before you decide anything; both are linked in Research your top 3.
Fifty representative occupations across twelve fields. Combine filters to narrow down, for example Hands-on & technical + B1 may be workable + Low customer contact. Filters within a group are OR; across groups they're AND. Tap + Compare on a card to put it into your comparison in Step 3.

Educate and support children and young people. Not a standard dual Ausbildung: see the warning below.
Support people in social-care settings. State-regulated, varies substantially by Bundesland.
Not everything called "Ausbildung" is the same thing. Erzieher/in has several training models (school-based routes, practice-integrated PiA, and other state-specific structures) which differ substantially in how they're organised and whether you're paid.
Don't compare an Erzieher/in programme against a standard dual Ausbildung just because both use the word. Check the training model, the Bundesland and the payment arrangement before you commit to anything.
These fifty are representative, not exhaustive: BIBB's 2026 register lists 324 recognised occupations under BBiG/HwO. Use the finder to identify a direction, then look up the exact occupation in the official databases.
Occupation names and training regulations change. Seven modernised occupations came into force for training starting in 2025, and from 1 August 2026 the construction occupations, including Maurer/in, Zimmerer/Zimmerin, Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer/in and Straßenbauer/in, train under new regulations. An old list copied from another website may already be wrong. BIBB: construction occupations 2026 ↗
Once you have three candidates, don't pick immediately. Score each from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). The totals update as you go and are saved on this device.
If the answer is no, reconsider the occupation. You'll be doing this work every day for two to three and a half years, and then for a career after that.
The level meters on the cards are German LifeBox planning indicators: our read on how much German the work realistically demands. They are not legal requirements, and no employer is bound by them.
More realistic where the work is strongly practical, communication is relatively straightforward, and technical skill carries most of the job: some skilled trades, industrial and technical occupations, warehouse and production roles. This does not mean an employer must accept B1.
Where you need substantial customer communication, documentation, telephone work, business correspondence or technical discussion: kaufmännische occupations, retail, hospitality front of house, healthcare support roles.
Where the occupation carries its own requirements, or communication is so central that a lower level would leave you unable to do the job. Nursing is the clearest case: training requires B1 or B2 depending on the federal state, plus proof of physical and mental fitness and a certificate of good conduct. Make it in Germany: nursing profile ↗
For third-country nationals, current government guidance sets B1 as the normal benchmark for the vocational-training visa, specifically where the training institution hasn't already tested your German and you haven't completed a preparatory course.
That clears immigration. It does not oblige a single employer to hire you, and it doesn't mean you'll cope in Berufsschule. Those are three different bars. Make it in Germany: vocational training visa ↗

Your training pay varies significantly by occupation, employer, collective agreement, Bundesland, training year, and whether the employer is public or private. Two people in the same occupation in different states can be paid noticeably differently.
Use salary as one factor, not your main selection criterion. When you shortlist an occupation, look at the actual vacancies you're interested in and compare their stated Ausbildungsvergütung: that's a real number for a real job, rather than a national average that describes nobody.
For what the statutory minimums and the visa livelihood threshold actually are, and why they're different numbers, see the Eligibility Checklist →
Once you've narrowed to three occupations, work through all four steps for each one. This is the part most applicants skip, and it's the part that separates a targeted application from a wasted year.
Search the occupation in BERUFENET, the Federal Employment Agency's occupation database. It gives you the detailed picture of tasks, training route and alternatives, including occupations similar to the one you searched, which is often how people find a better fit.
Open BERUFENET ↗Use the BIBB Berufesuche and the current register. It tells you the training duration, the legal basis, any specialisations, the training structure and the DQR classification. If an occupation isn't in there under that name, the name is wrong or out of date.
BIBB Berufesuche ↗Check-U is the Federal Employment Agency's free career-orientation tool. It tests your competencies and interests and matches them against the requirements of actual Ausbildung occupations. All its tests together take around two hours, and it's worth the time: it will suggest occupations you hadn't considered.
Start Check-U ↗Search the occupation on the Federal Employment Agency's Jobsuche and on employer career pages. Don't ask "is this profession in demand?"; ask "are companies actually hiring someone with my profile?"
Twenty vacancies will tell you more than twenty articles.
BA Jobsuche ↗Three professions, in three tiers. This is far safer than applying randomly to fifty unrelated Ausbildungsberufe, and much easier to write a convincing application for.
Similar work, potentially more accessible to you.
2The occupation you most want to do.
1A realistic alternative with overlapping skills.
3You don't need to decide your entire career today. You need to decide what to research next.

Requirements vary by occupation, employer, training model, federal state and individual circumstances. The German-language indicators marked by German LifeBox are planning guidance, not universal legal requirements.
For authoritative and current occupation information, always check the relevant BIBB and Bundesagentur für Arbeit occupation profile and the specific employer's vacancy.
