02 · Fit check

Is university
right for you?

Neither path is "better". They're for different people. Be honest with yourself about which one actually fits.

Suitable if you…
  • Want a globally recognised academic degree
  • Are aiming for research, specialist, or technical roles
  • Want tuition-free (or low-cost) education at a public university
  • Prefer structured academic learning over on-the-job training
  • Are considering a field that specifically requires a degree
Not suitable if you…
  • Want to start earning a salary immediately
  • Don't want to spend 2–5 years before working full-time
  • Prefer hands-on, practical training over lectures
  • Don't meet direct-entry requirements and don't want to do a foundation year
03 · Getting ready

What you need
before you apply.

Academic qualification

Bachelor's: from Winter Semester 2026/27, Class XII needs at least 70% of the maximum marks (all boards). With that plus your APS certificate you go through a Studienkolleg foundation year; for direct subject-restricted entry you also need one successful year of a recognised Bachelor's. Other school systems (IB, A-levels) and special cases are assessed individually: check the DAAD admission database ↗. Master's: a completed, relevant Bachelor's degree.

APS Certificate

Required for most Indian applicants to verify academic credentials. APS India's updated Bachelor's rules (announced 23 Feb 2026) apply from Winter Semester 2026/27; applications submitted before 15 March 2026 aren't affected. APS checklist →

dMAT: Master's applicants, from Summer Semester 2027

If your previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or Business / Management, the Digital Master Test is a required part of your APS documents from the Summer Semester 2027 intake. It's run by g.a.s.t. (not APS India) at test centres: €150, 3.5 hours, valid indefinitely, retakes allowed. No minimum score is needed for APS or the visa, though RWTH Aachen and Göttingen use the score in selection. Not needed if you registered for APS online or shipped your documents before 29 June 2026, already hold an APS certificate, or are in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programme. Next test: planned for the first quarter of 2027. APS India: dMAT ↗ · Our dMAT guide →

Financial proof

For the visa you prove €11,904 for the year (2026 figure, ≈€992/month). Most students do this with a blocked account opened before the visa appointment; a scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) also counts.

Age

No official upper age limit for university admission.

Health insurance

Mandatory from day one. Public student insurance costs about €141–146/month in 2026 (TK rate, including long-term care), available until the end of the semester in which you turn 30.

04 · Step by step

Your route,
in order.

Most people get confused because they don't know what comes first. Bachelor's and Master's differ in a couple of key steps, so pick yours.

Plan it month by month →
  1. 01
    SpracheLanguage

Reach German B1–B2 (or check if you need it)

A Studienkolleg asks for at least B1 German (some B2); German-taught degrees usually need B2 or higher, often DSH-2 / TestDaF 4 (around C1). English-taught programmes need IELTS/TOEFL instead. Know your target first, then learn accordingly.

  2. 02
    Studienkolleg?Direct entry or foundation year

Check your route before anything else

From Winter Semester 2026/27, Indian Class XII with at least 70% of the maximum marks (plus APS) gives you the Studienkolleg route: a foundation year ending in a qualifying exam, the Feststellungsprüfung. Direct subject-restricted entry needs 70% in Class XII plus one successful year of a recognised Bachelor's. Check your case in the DAAD admission database before you shortlist universities, not after.

  3. 03
    APSStart early

Get your APS certificate. This takes time.

APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verifies Indian academic credentials for German university applications. APS India gives no fixed processing time: it depends on how many applications it has and how quickly your school, board or university replies. So start well before your deadlines.

  4. 04
    BewerbungUniversity selection & application

Choose universities that match your profile

Germany has 400+ universities and colleges. Match your CGPA, German level, and field to the right ones instead of applying everywhere. Many use uni-assist, where the deadline is often 15 July for the Winter semester and 15 January for the Summer semester; many universities set earlier deadlines.

  5. 05
    SOPStatement of Purpose

    Write your Statement of Purpose

Your SOP is the most important document in your application: why Germany, why this university, why this programme, and what makes you a serious candidate. A weak SOP loses admission even with a great CGPA.

  6. 06
    SperrkontoBlocked account

Open your blocked account (€11,904 required)

Germany requires proof you can support yourself: €11,904 for the year (2026 figure). Most students use a blocked account; a scholarship or a declaration of commitment also counts. Providers include Expatrio and Fintiba, and the Federal Foreign Office doesn't recommend any particular one. Open it before your visa appointment.

  7. 07
    VisumApply online

Apply for your German student visa

Most student visas are applied for online through the Consular Services Portal (CSP), handled by the German mission for your state of residence: the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru. Typical documents: admission letter, APS certificate, proof of finances (blocked account), health insurance, language certificate, passport and photos. The fee is ₹8,400 (€75). Waiting times vary by mission and season, so apply as soon as you have your admission.

  8. 08
    AbflugBefore you fly

    Health insurance, accommodation & packing

You need health insurance before you arrive. TK (Techniker Krankenkasse) and AOK are popular public options. Book student accommodation early; German university housing has waiting lists. Bring enough cash/forex for the first month.

    DanachAfter graduation

    Your 18-month job-search window

After graduating, you get an 18-month residence permit (§20 AufenthG) to find a job matching your qualification. Once employed, you move to a work visa or EU Blue Card (from €45,934 gross/year in 2026 for recent graduates and shortage occupations; €50,700 otherwise; these thresholds are re-set every January). After around 2 years of qualified work, permanent residency is realistic, much faster than the standard 5-year route.

05 · Money

Mostly tuition-free.
Not cost-free.

Most public universities charge no tuition. Exceptions for non-EU students include Baden-Württemberg (€1,500 per semester) and TUM in Munich (usually €2,000 or €3,000 per semester for a Bachelor's, €4,000 or €6,000 for a Master's, for students starting since Winter 2024/25). Wherever you study, budget for this:

Semester contribution€100–350

Per semester, public universities. Covers admin and often a transport ticket.

Blocked account€11,904/yr

≈€992/month: the usual proof of funds for your visa.

Monthly living costs€842avg

What the average student in Germany spends (DAAD). Plan more for Munich, Frankfurt or Hamburg.

Working while you study

International students can work part-time to offset costs: up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year, or up to 20 hours a week during the lecture period, and full-time during semester breaks. The minimum wage is €13.90 an hour in 2026 and €14.60 from 1 January 2027. Public student health insurance costs about €141–146/month in 2026.

Scholarships

DAAD scholarships for Master's students pay €992/month. Each programme has its own deadline in the DAAD scholarship database, so check early. A scholarship that covers your costs can count as your proof of funds instead of a blocked account.

06 · Once you're ready

The application
playbook.

How applications actually work, when things are due, and what trips people up.

Many German universities use uni-assist.de, a centralised service that pre-checks international applications on behalf of its member universities; you submit documents once through their portal. Others, including several TU9 technical universities, accept applications directly through their own portal instead. Check each university's admission page before assuming which route applies. Using the wrong one costs you weeks.

Wintersemester

Starts October. The uni-assist deadline is often 15 July, but many Master's programmes close earlier: some Heidelberg programmes on 15 March, many TUM programmes on 31 May.

Sommersemester

Starts April, mostly Master's intakes. The uni-assist deadline is often 15 January.

Submit weeks before the deadline, not on it. uni-assist recommends applying at least 8 weeks before the deadline (its checks take about 4–6 weeks), and your online application and complete documents must reach uni-assist before the deadline.

  • Assuming 12th grade is enough. From Winter Semester 2026/27 you need at least 70% in Class XII, and 12th grade alone leads to Studienkolleg, not direct Bachelor's entry. Check your route before shortlisting universities, not after.
  • Starting APS too late. APS has no fixed processing time. Starting it a month before your deadline is one of the most common, most avoidable mistakes.
  • Forgetting the dMAT. Master's applicants in Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics or Business / Management need it from Summer Semester 2027. Test dates are few, so book early.
  • A generic SOP. A copy-pasted SOP is obvious to admissions committees who read hundreds. Be specific about this university, this programme.
  • Applying to too few, or mismatched, universities. Match your CGPA and profile realistically. Applying only to the most competitive universities is a common way to end up with zero offers.
  • Submitting on the deadline. Both uni-assist and university portals can take days to process a submission. Submitting on the exact deadline day risks missing it entirely.
  • Not budgeting the blocked-account timeline. Opening and funding a blocked account takes time to arrange. Leaving it until right before your visa appointment causes unnecessary delays.
08 · Common questions

Study in Germany
FAQ.

Short, honest answers to what students ask most.

Not on 12th grade alone. From Winter Semester 2026/27, APS India's rules are: Class XII with at least 70% of the maximum marks plus an APS certificate leads to a Studienkolleg foundation year and its qualifying exam; direct subject-restricted entry needs 70% in Class XII plus one successful year of a recognised Bachelor's. Other school systems (IB, A-levels) are assessed individually, so check the DAAD admission database.

At most public universities, yes. Exceptions for non-EU students include Baden-Württemberg, which charges €1,500 per semester, and TUM in Munich, which charges students starting since Winter 2024/25 usually €2,000 or €3,000 per semester for a Bachelor's and €4,000 or €6,000 for a Master's. Everywhere, expect a semester contribution of €100–350, which is not tuition. Check each university's fees page.

Not for the degree itself, but daily life, part-time jobs, and integration are much easier with at least basic German. And if you need a Studienkolleg: public Studienkollegs teach every subject in German, so you need at least B1 German regardless.

APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verifies Indian academic credentials and is required for most Indian applicants. Its updated Bachelor's rules (70% in Class XII) apply from Winter Semester 2026/27, and from Summer Semester 2027 selected Master's applicants must also include the dMAT.

€11,904 for the year (2026 figure), roughly €992/month, opened through a provider like Expatrio or Fintiba before your visa appointment. A scholarship or a declaration of commitment can replace it.

Yes: up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year, or up to 20 hours a week during the lecture period, and full-time during semester breaks. The minimum wage is €13.90 an hour in 2026 and €14.60 from 1 January 2027.

Winter semester (starts October): the uni-assist deadline is often 15 July, but many Master's programmes close earlier, some as early as mid-March. Summer semester (starts April, mostly Master's-only): often 15 January. Always check your programme's own page.

Depends on the university. Many use uni-assist as a centralised document-check service; others, including several TU9 technical universities, accept direct applications through their own portal. Check each university's admissions page to be sure.

Yes. An 18-month residence permit (§20 AufenthG) lets you search for qualified work after graduating. From there, a work visa or EU Blue Card, and realistic permanent residency after around 2 years of qualified employment, much faster than the standard 5-year route.

Generally yes, within reason. Studienkolleg tracks (T, M, S, G, W) map to subject groups rather than single programmes, so you have some flexibility to choose your exact degree when you apply afterward.

Yes. DAAD (Germany's national academic exchange body) offers scholarships for eligible students; its Master's scholarships pay €992/month. Each programme has its own deadline in the DAAD scholarship database, so check eligibility early: a scholarship that covers your costs can count as your proof of funds instead of a blocked account.

No. German-taught programmes need proof of German proficiency (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe or telc), not IELTS/TOEFL. IELTS/TOEFL is only for English-taught programmes.

Only if your previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics, or Business / Management and you're applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later. Then the dMAT (Digital Master Test, run by g.a.s.t.) is a required part of your APS documents. It costs €150, takes 3.5 hours at a test centre, can be retaken, and no minimum score is needed for APS or the visa. You're exempt if you registered for APS online or shipped your documents before 29 June 2026, already have an APS certificate, or are in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programme.
