Are you ready to apply?

Planning to apply for a duale Ausbildung in Germany? Before you start sending applications, it's worth checking whether you actually meet the basic requirements: your education, your German, your chosen occupation, your documents, your finances and your immigration pathway.

There is no single nationwide checklist that guarantees eligibility for every Ausbildung. Requirements vary by Ausbildungsberuf (training occupation), by employer, by vocational school, by federal state, and by your personal immigration situation. Use this page as a practical pre-application check, then verify the occupation-specific and visa requirements that apply to you.

⚠️ One thing to be clear about

"Eligible to apply" does not mean "guaranteed to be accepted." For a dual Ausbildung, employers have considerable freedom to decide who they hire. Meeting every requirement on this page makes you a valid applicant; it doesn't make you a hired one.

Your school education

0/4

Do you need a specific school qualification?

For a dual Ausbildung, there is no general nationwide legal requirement that every applicant hold a particular school-leaving certificate. The Federal Employment Agency states plainly that, legally, you do not need a specific school qualification to begin company-based training, but that the training company decides what it expects. In practice, many companies ask for at least a Hauptschulabschluss or higher. Federal Employment Agency: Duale Ausbildung ↗

  1. Legally

No single nationwide minimum school certificate for every dual Ausbildung.

  2. In practice

The employer may require a specific qualification, and often does.

  3. Certain occupations

Higher educational requirements may apply on top.

So the useful question isn't "Am I eligible for Ausbildung?" It's "What school qualification does this specific Ausbildung and this specific employer require?" That's a question you can actually answer, from the vacancy listing and the company.

What if your certificate is from another country?

If you completed school outside Germany, check whether your certificate needs recognition (Anerkennung). The Federal Employment Agency advises applicants with foreign school qualifications to have their certificate recognised, and the responsible authority depends on the type of certificate and the federal state you're heading to: decisions on equivalence are made by the certificate recognition offices (Zeugnisanerkennungsstellen) of the individual Länder. Recognition in Germany: school-leaving certificates ↗

📌 Three different procedures: don't mix them up
SchoolSchulabschluss-Anerkennung

Recognition of a foreign school certificate, handled by your federal state's recognition office.

Higher educationZeugnisbewertung

The ZAB's Statement of Comparability, which assesses a foreign higher-education qualification.

ProfessionBerufliche Anerkennung

Recognition of an already-completed foreign professional qualification.

These are not interchangeable. For most first-time Ausbildung applicants, do not automatically assume you need a ZAB Zeugnisbewertung. First work out what type of qualification you hold, then what the employer, school or authority actually asks for. ZAB: recognition of school qualifications ↗

Your German

Is B1 enough?

For the vocational-training visa, B1 is normally the benchmark, specifically where the training institution has not already tested your language skills and you have not yet completed a preparatory German course. For the training-place-search route under §17 AufenthG, B1 is stated outright as the required level. Make it in Germany: visa for vocational training ↗

But B1 should not be treated as a universal employer requirement. Your real requirement may be higher depending on the occupation, the employer, the vocational school, how much customer interaction the job involves, the technical terminology you'll be working in, and any occupation-specific rules. Health-related professions in particular commonly expect more.

?
Berufsschule

Lessons in German from day one

B1 may clear the immigration benchmark, but "B1" does not automatically mean you are ready to work and study in German. You will be sitting in Berufsschule lessons taught in German and taking instructions on a workplace floor in German, from day one.

Check these five things before applying

  1. What German level does this employer require?
  2. Does the vocational school have its own additional language requirement?
  3. Does the visa application require a language certificate in your situation?
  4. Can the employer or training institution formally confirm it has assessed your German?
  5. Would a higher level such as B2 make you a substantially stronger applicant?

Requirements for your specific Ausbildung

0/5

Your eligibility is not determined only by your nationality or your school certificate. The Ausbildungsberuf matters. Before applying, find the official entry requirements for the occupation you've chosen. Still deciding which one? The Ausbildung Profession Finder → filters 50 professions by field, work style and German level.

01Education

Does the employer require a Hauptschulabschluss, a mittlerer Schulabschluss, or Abitur/Fachabitur? Some ask for a specific school subject or a minimum grade in it.

02German

Does the employer or vocational school require B1, B2, or something else? Ask directly rather than inferring it from the visa benchmark.

03Previous experience

Is prior work experience, an internship or practical exposure preferred? For many trades a short relevant Praktikum is worth more than another certificate.

04Personal and physical requirements

Does the occupation involve specific physical, technical, mathematical or communication demands? These are real requirements in some trades and health professions, and they only apply where the occupation genuinely calls for them, not as a general rule.

05Regulated occupations

Some occupations carry additional legal requirements. If yours involves professional recognition or authorisation, check those requirements separately: they sit on top of everything else on this page.

🚨 Don't benchmark against someone else

Do not use another person's Ausbildung eligibility as your yardstick. Requirements differ significantly between occupations and between employers: two people with identical certificates can get opposite answers from two companies in the same city.

Your Ausbildung contract

If you're applying from outside Germany and already have a training place, you'll generally need evidence of that place for the vocational-training residence route. For a dual Ausbildung this normally means your signed Ausbildungsvertrag. The German Mission in India, for example, lists the signed training contract and the training plan among the required documents for an Ausbildung visa application.

Check these before you sign
  • Employer name and address are correct
  • The Ausbildung occupation is clearly stated
  • The start date is clear
  • The training duration is clear
  • The training allowance (Ausbildungsvergütung) is stated
  • The training location is clear
  • You understand whether the contract needs chamber registration or approval

Keep the complete signed contract and every accompanying document. You'll need them again for the visa, and again after you arrive.

There is no single universal document list for every Ausbildung application. Your final list depends on your country of residence, visa category, occupation and individual circumstances. Treat the list below as a master checklist to work from, not as the final word.

These are the documents for your visa and eligibility. The documents you send to an employer are a different, much shorter list, and mixing them up is how applicants end up paying for translations and apostilles they never needed. Ausbildung Application Checklist →

📌 Your mission's list is the one that counts

Do not copy another applicant's document list blindly: not from a forum, not from a friend who applied two years ago. For applicants in India

Do you need APS?

What APS India says

If you're applying from India, you may have heard that an APS certificate is required for German applications. APS India describes itself as verifying academic documents and qualifications issued by Indian educational institutions for applicants who intend to study in Germany, and its FAQ likewise frames APS around academic study.

That said, don't turn this into an absolute. The published official information does not set out a universal, explicit Ausbildung exemption, and we'd rather tell you that than give you a clean answer we can't stand behind.

💡 German LifeBox recommendation

If you're applying for a dual Ausbildung from India, don't automatically add APS to your standard checklist, but do verify the current APS and German mission instructions for your individual case before assuming that no verification applies.

This matters most if your application includes academic qualifications in addition to your school certificate. If you hold a Bachelor's degree and you're using it in your application, check rather than assume.

Going to university instead, or still deciding? The APS process is a genuine requirement on that path: see the full APS guide →

Prüfpunkt 6 · Requirement 6

Can you finance your Ausbildung?

0/4

Financial eligibility is one of the most important parts of the visa process, and one of the most commonly misunderstood. For company-based dual training, your Ausbildung salary can count toward securing your livelihood. Current federal guidance treats livelihood as secure where an in-company training allowance reaches:

Gross / month€1,0482026 threshold for in-company training
Net / month€8222026 threshold for in-company training

If your training allowance falls below the relevant threshold, the difference can be covered by additional financial proof: a Sperrkonto (blocked account) or a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal declaration of commitment). Make it in Germany: visa for vocational training ↗

Salary and statutory minimum are not the same thing

Germany has a separate statutory Mindestausbildungsvergütung: a legal minimum training allowance for qualifying dual Ausbildung contracts. For contracts beginning in 2026:

1st year€724
2nd year€854
3rd year€977
4th year€1,014

The rate is fixed by the year your training starts and holds for its full duration. BIBB: Mindestausbildungsvergütung 2026 ↗

🚨 The trap almost everyone walks into
Legal minimum, year 1 · €724
Gap €324
€1,048 livelihood benchmark

These figures are not the same thing as the immigration financial threshold. Compare them: the statutory first-year minimum is €724. The livelihood benchmark is €1,048 gross.

Which means an Ausbildung salary can legally meet the minimum training allowance and still be insufficient by itself for your visa's livelihood requirement. Always check your actual gross and net training allowance against the current threshold. "It's a paid Ausbildung" does not automatically mean your finances are sufficient.

Verify before you apply. Both the livelihood thresholds and the statutory minimums are revised: the minimum training allowance is recalculated annually and published each autumn. Check the current figures immediately before you submit your visa application rather than trusting a number you saw months ago, including this one.

Prüfpunkt 7 · Requirement 7

Which visa route applies to you?

0/3

This comes down to a single question: do you already have a training place?

I have an Ausbildung place§16a AufenthG · vocational training

Look at the vocational-training route under §16a AufenthG. You'll generally need evidence of the training place (normally your signed Ausbildungsvertrag) plus German at the applicable level and proof your livelihood is secured.

No general age limit applies here.

I don't have one yet§17 AufenthG · training-place search

Check whether you qualify for the training-place-search route under §17 AufenthG. It's a separate permit with its own conditions. Tick the ones that are true for you:

0 of 4 conditions met

The §17 permit can be granted for up to nine months. During that time you may work up to 20 hours per week and complete up to two weeks of trial work. Make it in Germany: both routes ↗

📌 The under-35 rule is not a general age limit

The under-35 condition belongs specifically to the training-place-search route. Do not treat it as an age limit on Ausbildung itself. If you already hold a signed training contract, it does not apply to you, and plenty of people start an Ausbildung well past 35.

Want the full sequence from application to arrival? See the Ausbildung Roadmap → If you're weighing this up against university study, the student visa checklist → covers that route instead.

Don't apply yet if…
  • You haven't chosen a specific occupation
  • You don't know what your target employer requires
  • Your German isn't at the applicable level yet
  • You haven't checked whether your certificate needs recognition
  • You haven't compared your salary to the current threshold
You're ready to apply when…
  • You can name your occupation and its requirements
  • Your German meets the employer's bar, not just the visa's
  • Your documents exist as files, not as intentions
  • You know which visa route you're on and why
  • You've checked your mission's current page yourself

Five final verifications before you submit

  1. Your occupation

Check the official information for your exact Ausbildungsberuf.

  2. Your school certificate

Find out whether recognition is required, and which authority is responsible in your federal state.

  3. Your German

Check both the employer's requirement and the immigration requirement. They are not the same number.

  4. Your money

Check your actual training allowance against the current financial thresholds.

  5. Your visa

Use the current information from the German mission responsible for your place of residence.

Rules and financial thresholds change. Do this final verification immediately before submitting your visa application, not when you first started planning.

✕
Avoid these

The mistakes that cost people a cycle

  • Assuming "paid Ausbildung" means the finances are handled. The statutory minimum and the visa livelihood threshold are different numbers, and the gap is real.
  • Treating the under-35 rule as a general age limit. It belongs to the §17 search route only.
  • Getting a ZAB Zeugnisbewertung that was never needed. That procedure is for higher-education qualifications, not school certificates.
  • Applying on "I speak some German". The Berufsschule will not slow down for you, and employers can tell in the first two minutes of an interview.
  • Copying a document list from a forum. Your mission's current checklist is the only list that governs your application.
  • Applying to one occupation and waiting. Employers choose freely; a shortlist beats a single hope.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Not for every dual Ausbildung. Legally there's no nationwide requirement for a particular school qualification: the Federal Employment Agency is explicit about this. Employers decide what they expect, and many ask for at least a Hauptschulabschluss. Check the specific vacancy.

B1 is the normal visa benchmark in many vocational-training cases, but it's not a guarantee an employer will accept you. Your employer, occupation or Berufsschule may expect stronger German: health professions commonly do.

Not automatically. A ZAB Zeugnisbewertung concerns foreign higher-education qualifications. A foreign school certificate goes through a different process, handled by your federal state's recognition office.

Don't assume either answer without checking. APS India's official information describes APS primarily in connection with academic study. For an Ausbildung application, verify the current requirements with APS India and your responsible German mission.

No general under-35 rule applies to someone who already has an Ausbildung place. The explicit under-35 condition belongs to the §17 training-place-search route.

Two separate questions. The statutory minimum for 2026 contracts starts at €724 in year one. The immigration livelihood benchmark is €1,048 gross or €822 net per month. A contract can satisfy the first and still fall short of the second.

Potentially, via the §17 training-place-search route: but only if you meet all its conditions: under 35, a higher-education-access school certificate, B1 German, and €1,091 per month for 2026. Maximum stay is nine months.

No. The immigration framework is broadly similar, but educational, language and practical requirements differ substantially between occupations and employers, and some occupations are additionally regulated.
